In Great Company

Hey! Turns out I made the cast of Listen To Your Mother! I am super excited. I have done many, many public appearances in my life: speeches, television, presentations, bridal shows, an appearance on Donald Trump’s The Apprentice, a Sears commercial, a TV special about motherhood, you name it. (One of the most fun things about being a magazine editor is I never knew what opportunity would come to me next.)

But I have actually never stood on stage and read a work I wrote as part of a performance.

I can’t wait! And I am in utterly fantastic company!

See?

I am so looking forward to the rehearsals and to meeting the women above I have not yet met. I absolutely loved the experience of auditioning (read the post below), and can’t wait for the big night! (May 12; buy tickets here.) And come up and say hi after the show!

I love doing something I’ve never done before. Please share with me: What have you done or tried recently you had never done before?

About stacy

I am a writer, author, mother, longtime magazine editor (20 years in the business, 6 as editor in chief of Redbook), optimist, and, above all, a searcher. Right now, I'm searching for whom I'm really meant to be, after living through a series of very jarring changes that bumped me out of the life I was living: a son, then a divorce, a cataclysimcally messed-up house, which led to a book (Falling Apart In One Piece), and then, one week after that book came out, my parents both fell gravely ill, I resigned from my job (and maybe my career), my son got very scared, my parents died, and at the same time, my boyfriend moved in with my son and me. Since then I've been trying to figure out what's next. Or, in other words, how to fill in the blanks.

Stacy — that is cool! I recently did something that I have never done — a few things. I was cast as a part of the Vagina Monologues for V-Day, and I got to sexually moan on stage as a lesbian sex worker. Hmm…not being a lesbian, or a sex worker, or very extroverted, this was new — but very empowering and helped to raise money to help women who have or are suffering from domestic violence or sexual assault. Totally great, and I too got to work with a wonderful group of women. All I have to say to you is “Get it girl!”

Congrats! I am so excited for you — and for our show!

I recently went up in a high air balloon and loved it. I felt like I was a bird in the sky and can do anything.

That is so great! Wishing I was not all the way on the other side of the country so I could some see.

I recently tried taking a knitting class. It was pretty much a bust (not a great class, and I realized I’m not going to make time for knitting). But it did feel good to attempt something new. Your question has me realizing I need to do more of that.

  4. This is very very cool! (Nothing new to share whatsoever… but reading always takes me to new places, so that’s not a bad thing!)

    Keep us posted. So exciting!

    Tremendously Exciting!!!

    Brava, lady.

We just edited a short story and sent it The Paris Review. Never donthat before. Felt very Janet Flanner filing copy from foreign parts.

Looking forward to meeting you on Sunday!

    Feeling your excitement, Stacy!
As for something “new” — I’m needing to contact WRIR-FM about reading for one of their “Rainbow Minute” segments, recorded 1-minute spots highlighting leaders against homophobia; they’re broadcast as filler between songs or playlists:

    Hi Stacy:
I just finished reading your book and was blown away by your honesty. I finished the book in one night, I couldn’t put it down! I wish you and your son the best.

Yasmine, thanks so much for your kind words about my book! I so appreciate hearing them. And my son and I are doing very well right now, so thank you also for that wish. Sending you love, SLM
